A traditional celebration in Doral will be colorful, fun, and not-too-spooky for little ones.
Downtown Doral is presenting the Dias De Los Muertos event, the Day of the Dead. The festival dates back thousands of years and originated with the Toltec, Aztec, and others who believed in celebrating the dead not mourning them. In their tradition, the dead remain part of the community, and are returned temporarily to life when they are remembered and celebrated. Thus, although the theme of the festival is death, it is hugely life affirming.
The upcoming festival features “Flora,” a skull made from flowers standing six feet tall. She will be on display for several weeks, giving people the chance to take photos.
Flora will be in Doral from October 18 through November 8, and the Grand Celebration takes place in Downtown Doral on October 28. From 3.00 pm until 6.00 pm, the event is family-friendly, with opportunities to enjoy delicious treats, have photos taken with live Catrinas, and enjoy special bites from local restaurants. Catrina is the word for “skull,” and the live Catrinas are those individuals who create the day’s elaborate skull make-up.
From 7.00pm until 10.00pm, Mariachi parades and twinkling lights will light up Downtown Doral, and restaurants will feature special Menus inspired by Dia De Los Muertos, including a drink inspired by Flora herself.
