The Arts Warehouse will teach Delray Beach locals how to turn their clothing into wearable art in April.
Wearable Art with Upcycled Fabric is a course where students can learn useful techniques for elevating the look of their clothes. During the course, participants will be taught hand embroidery skills and design transfer methods. All supplies aside from the clothing will be provided for the workshop, such as carbon transfer paper, fabric paint, water containers, and embroidery hoops. It is recommended that students bring denim, smooth cotton, or jersey knit clothing to the class.
The instructor for the upcycling course will be Melanie Oliva, a professional artist who has taught for organizations like MOCA North Miami and The Bass Museum. She worked in Chicago as a creative director and has had her work featured at The Frank Gallery. Oliva is also the founder of two artist collectives and was a teacher at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. Students will have an opportunity to use one of Oliva’s designs in their art projects.
The wearable art workshop will be on Saturday, April 1 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The cost to take part in Oliva’s course is $85 per student. Participants are asked to bring two items of clothing to the event. Businesses that hold projects similar to this may use poster printing to attract local artists to their workshops.
