The South Florida Contra Dance Society is sponsoring Contra #27 and Live Music Extravaganza, an evening of folk dancing, in mid-August. Participants of all skill levels are welcome. Beginning dancers in contra dance or English Country Dance are welcome to participate in free lessons 30 minutes before the social dance begins. Poster printing or other services from Print shops are often used to publicize events like this.
Contra dance is an American art form that descended from English and Scottish roots. Dances are choreographed in advance and led by a caller, similarly to square dance.
The group’s website summarizes their mission:
“The South Florida Contra Dance Society (SFLCDS) is, as our name would suggest, the premiere organization for contra dance in Southeastern Florida. We host monthly dances and promote awareness and love of contra throughout Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties.”
This evening of dancing and fellowship will occur on Saturday, August 16. The venue is the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, located at 2601 Saint Andrews Boulevard in Boca Raton. The lesson segment of the event will begin at 7:00 PM, with the social dance portion occurring from 7:30 to 9:30. The fee for this event is $13, and tickets can be purchased on the Eventbrite website. Once purchased, no refunds will be given.
