Deerfield Beach to undertake temporary road improvements

The 2021 AARP Community Challenge has given a grant of $20,000 to the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (BMPO) and the city of Deerfield Beach.

The Challenge provides funds for quick action projects that enhance the liveability of communities for people of all ages. The collaboration between the city and the BMPO was selected for this funding from over 3,500 applications across the country. Applications focused on projects to improve civic engagement, public spaces, transportation, and housing, among other needs.

The city and BMPO plan to temporarily redesign NE 3rd Avenue between NE 44th Street and Sample Road, making it safer and more comfortable for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Among the improvements planned are traffic calming features, enhanced intersections, informational and wayfinding signage, bike lane enhancements, and crosswalks with decorative surface treatments. Local Print shops can help to spread the word to the community about such improvements through the use of Flyers.

As a pilot project, delineator posts, durable plastic planters, and artistic asphalt elements can be used to ensure no excavation of the existing roadway. Input from the community is being used in the design process.

NE 3rd Avenue will be transformed for a period of six months, after which the community and the project can evaluate the successes and weaknesses of the process to create a long-term plan for the street.
