The coastal community of Deerfield Beach, Florida, has become a

Growth and development

Native
Americans were the first to live in the area that is today's Deerfield
Beach, with settlers of European descent arriving in the 1870s, drawn by
the lush terrain, fragrant flowers, and native plants such as saw
palmetto and cabbage palms. The settlement joined others that were
springing up in the state, including the villages of Miami and Key West
to the south, and Palm Beach to the north.

By the 1890s, homes
were being built along the Hillsboro River, and by 1896, the Florida
East Coast Railroad came through the community, opening it up to new
residents. Until Henry Flagler brought his railroad in, most of the
inhabitants were local fauna, or the Seminole Indians. Once it became
easier to get to Deerfield, the community began to grow.

By 1910,
businesses had opened in Deerfield, and with them came several stores,
hotels, a lodge, and the post office. However, Deerfield's economy was
based on agriculture, and once again, the railroad proved vital. Growers
brought their freshly-harvested fruits and vegetables to a shed next to
the railroad depot and shipped them north from there. The community
remained largely agricultural until after the end of the Second World
War.

The wonderful history of the community is kept and shared by
the Deerfield Beach Historical Society, founded in 1973. The society is
located in the historic Butler house - Alice and James Butler were
early pioneers. Organizations such as this, which keep many records and

A changing economy

In
the late 1940s, the agricultural sector became less important, and the
community began to transition to an economy based largely on tourism.

events that became so popular it was transformed into Founders' Day,
which is now celebrated annually.
