Coral Springs police to offer self-defence classes

The Coral Springs Police Department (CSPD) will host two classes that teach locals how to protect themselves.

The Coral Springs Police Self Defense Class is a lesson that teaches women real-life safety skills that improve their situational awareness and help them avoid danger. The class is intended for women who are 13 and older, and no prior experience is needed to take the course. The CSPD will also offer a separate workshop for teens to help them stay safe in the community. The teens-only lesson is intended for 11th and 12th-graders who live in Coral Springs.

The CSPD is an organization that started in 1965 with Richard Vedilago as the first police chief of Coral Springs. The current department head is Chief Brad Mock, who joined the force in 1998 and has served several roles, including SWAT Commander and K-9 Unit Sergeant. Many programs are offered by the CSPD, such as the Citizens Police Academy, Hire a Police Officer, and Community Assisted Patrol. The group also has programs for children like Safety Town.

The safety course for women will be held on Monday, March 23rd from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Northwest Regional Library. The teens-only class will take place on Thursday, April 30th from 5:45 pm to 8:00 pm. Both events are free to join, though attendees are required to fill out a waiver. Police departments that hold similar events can use poster printing to help share information about their lessons with locals.
