Both indoor and outdoor pastimes will be given the spotlight in the Coral Springs area during the next few months.
On an indoor note, the Coral Springs Park and Recreation Department is organizing an open play chess program that will culminate in the first-ever King of Coral Springs Chess Tournament coming in mid-May.
National Scholastic Chess Foundation instructors will be on hand at each session and will be available to assist players of all ages and at all levels. There will also be an open play area for members to practice their skills.
Registration is required and is first come, first served, and space is limited for both players and spectators, with the tournament limited to 80 attendees. Children under 13 must have parents with them.
The practice and instruction sessions will be tomorrow (February 10), and then on March 10 and April 14 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2501 Coral Springs Drive. The King of Coral Springs Chess Tournament is scheduled for May 15th.
For those looking for exercise and fresh air, nearby Coconut Creek will hold its 19th Annual City of Coconut Creek 5K Butterfly Run and Walk on February 7. This will be on a USA Track and Field certified course. Medals will go to the first 800 finishers and the first 800 registrants will receive race T-Shirts sporting this year’s graphic design.
Finally, Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach will have its 3rd Annual Love Serving Autism 5K on April 10.
