Local amateur boat builders amass cardboard and duct tape

Over 2,500 people are expected to attend this year’s 3rd Annual Clermont Cardboard Classic coming early in August.

The event will be two days of boatbuilding and racing for trophies and medals based on creativity and engineering. Registration will be divided into the Tadpole Elementary, Guppy Middle School, Dolphin and Pods family, young adults and high school division, and the Whale adult category. Moby Dick boats of four or more adults will cost $80.

The event will kick off on the Friday evening in downtown Clermont. Last-minute registration, check-in, and beginning of onsite boat building starts at 6:00 pm. Entrants can also bring boats they built at home. The public will vote on their favorite boats from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Saturday’s schedule has race day beginning with more boat building from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. From 10:00 am to 11:00 am, boaters check in. That will be followed with the races starting at noon. Awards will be presented at 7:30 pm, and the event will close with Norse Funeral at 8:15 pm.

Boat builder families often take pictures of themselves and their creations. These photos often end up at local Stationery printers to be included in family yearly Calendars.

The Friday night festivities will be at Waterfront Park, 330 3rd Street, August 7. The races will be Saturday, August 8 at Victory Point, 1050 Victory Way.
