During what has been described as a "football game for nerds," teams of students from 15 high schools across southwest Florida will descend on Mariner High in Cape Coral this weekend for the second meet of the Florida FIRST Tech Challenge.
The meet is for the Pinellas County League, one of several local leagues across the state. Teams participating in the meet include the Tech Warriors, from Mariner High school. The Warriors team is led by William James, who teaches engineering at the school, and consists of 25 students, each of whom play a part in designing and building the robot for the competition.
Students can use poster printing to encourage others to participate in the challenge. While the goal remains the same each year (to build a robot that can control itself or be controlled by a human) the specific aspects of the competition vary.
The theme for this year is the ‘Cascade Effect’. The robot might be required to pick up and drop balls, or to put the balls into tubes. Initially, the robot should be programmed to act on its own. In the second part of the competition, the students can use controllers to direct the robot's movements.
Admission to the contest on Saturday is free and open to all. It starts at 10:00 am and lasts until 4:00 pm.
