Local students take top prize with innovative vacuum

Cape Coral high school students had the opportunity to shine at CEO Academy, a yearly, week-long summer camp offered by Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida.

The summer camp gave students from across Southern Florida the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of establishing a business. During the week, the students went on field trips to local businesses, learned how to put together a business plan, and were given insight into marketing.

Throughout the summer camp, the students worked in teams, supervised by teachers and business leaders. Each team had to come up with a business idea, which was presented to area entrepreneurs at the end of the week.

Ideas ranged from a parking app designed to cut down on the time spent looking for parking, to a solar panel that powers the air conditioner in a parked car to keep its temperature low. The winner of the week was a vacuum, created by a team that included students from Cape Coral, that uses ultraviolet light to sanitize a floor.

The winning team took home a $1,000 prize, perhaps tempting camp organizers and the schools involved to use Stationery printers to create certificates for the student winners.

Dr. Nancy Graham, the superintendent of Lee County Schools, was impressed by the students' creativity. She said to the Cape Coral Daily Breeze:

"Kids today are fearless in putting ideas forward. Our future is in good hands."
