For the past 10 years, WGCU has sponsored a special awards program, ‘WGCU's MAKERS: Women Who Make Southwest Florida’. The program drew to a close at the end of 2016, naming its last five recipients.
Among the last five winners was Heather Mazurkiewicz, a resident of Cape Coral and someone who is actively involved with her community.
Mazurkiewicz and the four other award winners were chosen from a pool of more than 50 nominees. A team of community leaders and formed MAKERS award winners had a hand in choosing this year's winner. To receive the award, a woman needs to have participated in a project that leaves a lasting impact on the culture, economy, people, or environment of Southwest Florida.
Organizers of awards programs often use Mailing services to let recipients know that they have won and to solicit nominations from community leaders and former winners. Mazurkiewicz told the Cape Coral Daily Breeze that she was flattered but shocked when she learned that she had won the award.
Over the years, she has participated in a number of programs and worked with a number of organizations that make her a candidate for the recognition. She serves as the CEO of the Building Industry Association and works with the Rotary Club and the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce. Her major project is working as a volunteer firefighter, on call 24 hours a day.
