Anyone interested in learning more about wildlife and conservation efforts in Cape Coral is invited to the monthly meeting of the Friends of Wildlife organization.
The guest speaker for the final meeting of the season will be Dr. John Herman, whoserves on the faculty at Florida Gulf Coast University. He and his students will share what they observed after filming and measuring the burrows created by the gopher tortoise – a state-threatened keystone species.
The endangered reptile digs burrows that more than 300 other species than move into and call home. Dr. Herman and his students have paid close attention to the population of tortoises in an urban area, and to the creatures in an urban environment that might use their burrows.
The Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife can promote Dr. Herman's appearance using flyer printing and word of mouth. Dr. Herman will be providing answers to questions that might be of interest to locals, particularly those who are keen to protect and conserve wildlife. During the talk, he and his students will show some of the visitors the gopher tortoise burrows, as well as some of the interesting behaviors they saw.
Admission to the meeting is free and anyone who is interested is welcome to attend. It will take place at the Rotary Park Environmental Center, at 5505 Rose Garden Road, on May 12, getting underway at 7:00 pm.
