Teaches at Cape Coral's Diplomat Middle School spent the last week of January showing students how enjoyable it can be to read a great book.
During the state's eighth annual Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! program, students were encouraged to bring in their own Books or other materials to read. The school offered a number of incentives to those who brought reading materials to school. For example, on the Wednesday, students who brought a book from home were also allowed to wear a hat during the school day. On the Thursday, students were encouraged to "slide into reading" by bringing a book and wearing a pair of flip-flops. Schools will often use flyer printing to publicize novel ideas like these.
The week also featured a number of VIP guests, including Earnest Graham, a former player with the National Football League. Graham, who now serves as the head football coach at a nearby high school, dropped by the middle school for a pizza party. He also brought along a few signed Copies of a book, ‘Football Hero’, to give to students.
Steve Teuber, the Lee County School Board chairman, was another special guest during Celebrate Literacy week. Teuber brought ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’, his daughter's favorite book, to read to students.
The teachers behind the literacy program declared the week a success, noting that the students seemed to enjoy it and that they hoped it would encourage a few more of them to read for fun.
