The student, Tyler Feichthaler, competed against students in grades four through eight from across the state to become a semi-finalist. The first round of the competition involved a geography test at the elementary, followed by an online test.
Speaking to Cape Coral Youth News, Tyler noted:
"[The test] wasn’t that hard. I have these two Books, and I was studying them. I went on the geo bee website and answered the daily question. Whenever I took the test I knew I got an A on that test.”
He is one of just four fourth grade students to make it to this round of competition. Tyler even edged out Eric, his older brother, who was previously the top geography student at their school.
Tyler's family celebrated his achievement in several ways. They went to dinner at Stevie Tomatoes, where Tyler enjoyed a quesadilla. His father, Eric Feichthaler, who was once mayor of Cape Coral, announced Tyler's win on Facebook. His school could recognize his achievement with Banners and Posters.
The State Geo Bee will take place on April 1 in Jacksonville and will feature 100 students. Students who win the state bee will get to travel to Washington, DC in May for the national competition and will also receive $100.
