She will receive the award later this month from the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL), an organization dedicated to supporting elected women at all levels.
Sawicki is one of just 18 female legislators from across the U.S. to earn the recognition. The NFWL created the award in 2013, during its 75th anniversary, as a way to honor the dedication and work of female elected officials in the U.S. Award recipients are nominated by their constituents and colleagues. A panel made up of NFWL members chooses the final winners.
In response to the news that she won the award, Mayor Sawicki issued a statement that read:
"My intent always is to represent Cape Coral in a positive light and be an advocate on behalf of the citizens. I am very humbled and honored to receive this recognition from such a prestigious national organization for elected women."
Cape Coral officials could use banner printing to spread the news of the mayor's recognition throughout the city.
Sawicki and the 17 other recipients will be given their awards on September 14, during the Women of Excellence and Installation Dinner, at the NFWL's annual conference in Oklahoma City. This year's conference takes place September 11 through the 15. A number of workshops, plenaries, and dinners are scheduled during the conference's long weekend.
