Cape Coral high school cleans up at musical awards

Last week, the Island Coast High School in Cape Coral caused a surprise by taking home the ‘Outstanding Overall Production’ award during the ceremony for the High School Musical Awards.

Island Coast's upset on Monday, May 5, marked the first time in the history of the awards that a school other than Cypress Lake High Center for the Arts or North Fort Myers High has won the overall production award. In taking home the best production award, Island Coast triumphed over three other performing arts schools as well.

The high school's production of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ won a number of other awards on Monday too. Rachael Lord took home the best actress prize while Melissa Maturo won best supporting actress. While the two actors from Island Coast who were nominated for best actor and best supporting actor did not take home the prize, it was no small feat that they were named as runners up.

The school could use poster printing to highlight its achievements on Monday, perhaps hanging a banner in the school by the theater.

Winning the High School Musical Awards does not just bring fame and a trophy, though; it also has some real benefits. Island Coast received $1,500 to put towards its theater program, while individual winners each took home $1,000 scholarships to Edison State College.
