To make sure that Lee County and Cape Coral food pantries are well stocked for the summer time, when donations are needed most, postal workers in the area are getting ready for the annual letter carrier food drive.
Now in its 25th year, the event, titled ‘Stamp Out Hunger’, is the largest single day food drive in the country. During the food drive, people leave cans of food and other nonperishable food items in their mailboxes, to be collected by postal workers. Foods such as tuna fish, beans, canned meats, and peanut butter are in particularly high demand at the annual drive.
The post office can use poster printing to spread the word about the event to Mailing customers. Mail carriers can also deposit Flyers in people's mailboxes to let them know about the food drive.
Foods donated in Cape Coral are typically given to the Harry Chapin Food Bank, which then distributes the donations to agencies throughout the county, all for no cost.
The actual event takes place on May 13, but people are invited to collect and donate food before then. Those who live in Lee County on a seasonal basis and who will return home before the date of the event are invited to clear out their pantries and bring any donations to their local post office.
