It was recently announced that the Florida Department of Transportation has approved a grant and will provide Cape Coral and the Lee County School District with $729,412.
Back in 2016, the city and school district put their heads together and applied for a Safe Routes to School grant from the department, which has now been awarded.
The money will go towards the creation of 2.3 miles of sidewalk on the south and north sides of Trafalgar Parkway, from Southwest 22nd Court to Southwest 16th Court. Sidewalks would also be installed on Southwest 20th Avenue/Nott Road, stretching from Southwest Pine Island Road up to Trafalgar Parkway.
The goal of the sidewalks is to provides students who go to Trafalgar Elementary and Middle Schools with a safer route to school.
Cities looking to receive grant money can use local Print shops to prepare proposals and applications for various programs.
The next step in the process is for the Cape Coral City Council to review and approve the plans to build the sidewalks. The goal for this year is to design the improvements and the plan for the sidewalks. The target date for construction to begin is not until 2021.
The plan is to build the sidewalks using in-house construction teams. Construction on the sidewalks would not be able to begin until the current utility expansion project is finished, which is due to be near the end of 2019.
