Cape Coral children get free meals this summer

During the summer months, children across Cape Coral and the rest of Lee County have the opportunity to enjoy a free breakfast, lunch, or snack.

Originally created to provide access to meals to children who wouldn't have that access outside of school, the free meal program is open to any child, up to age 18, in the county. No income requirements or application Forms are required. To receive a meal, a child simply needs to be present at one of the sites during the designated mealtimes.

Last year, the county had a meals program for 40 days. During that time, it gave out more than 70,000 breakfasts, more than 147,000 lunches and nearly 65,000 snacks.

Lorina Woods, the School District of Lee County's program coordinator, noted that she believes that not many parents know about the meal service. Flyers and Brochures sent to the homes of families in the school district can help spread the word about the program and help more children get access to food.

A total of 96 sites will offer meals over the summer. Each site has the options of giving out two meals each day, such as breakfast and a snack, or lunch and a snack. Exact meal times vary by site and parents are encouraged to contact the location in advance to confirm the time. Although children don't need to register for the program, they are required to eat the meals at the site.
