Students end busy summer with song

Students from Bradenton will be celebrating the end of their summer program with a special concert that is free and open to the public.

More than 100 students participated in the Educational Consultants Consortium, which had them taking classes, cleaning local schools, and learning about careers. The program is designed to keep at-risk students busy over the summer months while school is out.

According to the executive director of the consortium and former Manatee County School Board member, Barbara Harvey, the program helps to build the self-esteem of the students and teaches them how to work with their peers.

The program kicked off earlier in the summer with a speech from Representative Vern Buchanan about work ethic. The students then received their assignments and worked with the custodial staff of Manatee County to prepare the schools for the upcoming academic year.

For their work between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm each day, the students received a small stipend. After lunch, they were involved in physical education, academic work, and career exploration.

The concert will be at 6:30 pm at the Mount Raymond Full Gospel Church tomorrow in Palmetto, just a short distance from Bradenton. The use of local Print companies is a good way for the Consortium to prepare various materials encouraging the community to attend the concert and learn more about the summer program.
