Snooty, the world’s oldest known manatee (according to the Guinness Book of World Records), who lives at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton, will be turning 68 this year. To celebrate this special occasion, the Museum is holding its annual Snooty Birthday Card Contest.
The contest, which is now open and runs through July 8, provides an opportunity for children in preschool through grade six from around the state, country, and world to wish Snooty a happy birthday with an original and creative card. There will be winners of first, second, and third place prizes in several age groups.
The Museum has used a poster printing company to create a piece with more details about the contest and an entry form.
Snooty arrived in Manatee County in 1949 and has been under the care of the South Florida Museum since then. He was named the County’s official mascot in 1979.
According to the CEO of the Museum, Brynne Anne Besio, Snooty is a one-of-a-kind animal not only for his historical significance, but also for being able to provide valuable insight into the lifecycle and health of his species.
In addition, a birthday bash is planned for July 23 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm in the Spanish Plaza just in front of the Museum. It is designed to promote wildlife awareness, and is free to attend.
