Minor league baseball celebrates Hispanic heritage

The Bradenton Marauders minor league baseball (MiLB) team will again be rebranded to the Bradenton Barbanegras to celebrate Hispanic heritage.

The Barbanegras were created in 2019 as part of the MiLB Copa Diversión initiative, a program created to encourage the culture and values in U.S. Hispanic communities.

Known in English as the Fun Cup, the initiative is designed to increase awareness and attendance in the ballpark for those of Hispanic origin. It also aims to connect participating league teams to their communities by creating a family experience that matches fans' values and increases passion for, and diversity in, the game of baseball.

At the close of the baseball season, civic leaders and others will gather to choose the overall Copa de la Diversión champion, based on community involvement, stadium experience and philanthropy.

Since Bradenton is close to the gulf coast of Florida, its history includes stories of marine explorers and Spanish conquerors. The ball team's second identity fits well as barbanegras means black beards. The team expands this theme through its mascot, Marty the Marauder, a modern barbanegra.

The Marauders play in the Florida State League and are the single-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sports teams of all levels often use printing companies to provide Promotional Products for ballpark giveaways.

Hispanic heritage will be celebrated September 1, 2024 at noon at LECOM park in a game versus the Tampa Tarpons.
