Honors given to Bradenton journalists

The Florida Press Club has recently honored five journalists from the Bradenton Herald and the Lakewood Ranch Herald for excellence in writing.

Three awards were given to Charles Schelle, a business writer, one of which was second place in the Lucy Morgan Award competition for in-depth reporting. Third place awards were given to him in business writing for do-not call complaints in the Tampa Bay area and in travel writing for a story he did on Major League Soccer at IMG Academy in Bradenton.

A first-place award in religion writing was given to Richard Dymond for three stories he did as a collection on faith.

A second place award was given for light feature writing to Sabrina Rocco. She had written stories about a resident of Lakewood Ranch who made greeting cards, a stamp collector in Lakewood Ranch and Parrish’s Dry Creek TV production.

A first-place award in sports writing was given to John Lembo for three stories he did, once of which was about how the Manatee Hurricane football team came out of a deficit of 21-0 by defeating Fort Lauderdale University School, which is nationally ranked. Other stories he wrote were about how the Girls’ Basketball team of Southeast High won the state title and how Southeast defeated Palmetto 34-26 for the football finale of Coach Paul Maechtle.

A third place award was given to Alan Dell for sports columnists for a collection of three columns.
