Florida college opens its doors to middle school students

An event was recently held at the University of South Florida (USF) Sarasota-Manatee, located just a short distance from Bradenton, for 150 middle school students from Manatee County and their parents to get a taste of what college is like.

It was a collaborative effort between the Admissions Department of the College and the Manatee County School District Title I Department, which services some of the poorest students in the district. Title I middle schools provided transportation to and from the campus. Students and their parents were able to tour the campus and pick up information on the college admissions process. This was a good opportunity for the college to provide Brochures on the various procedures and areas of study.

According to Cheryl Evans, a Title I specialist, these students may be the first in their family to go to college, so planning for this during the middle school years is a good time to start so they can get ready for high school and do not feel like they are catching up throughout their high school experience.

Admissions outreach coordinator, Sean Grosso, said that the college was glad to partner with the school district on the event. He stressed the importance of people who go to college knowing that they can turn to USF Sarasota-Manatee as a valuable resource.
