Celebration commemorates landing of Spaniards

The De Soto Landing Event will be taking place for the 77th consecutive year at the De Soto National Memorial in Bradenton later this month.

This is a recreation of the landing of Hernando de Soto’s on Florida shores 477 years ago. Those who will take part in the reenactment will arrive at the monuments in the park and proclaim the land of La Florida for Spanish crown. They will then tell stories from those who traveled over 4,000 miles searching for glories and riches, narrating battles with the Native Americans from the Southeast of the United States. They will conclude in relating how the landing was ultimately a failure in La Florida.

Visitors will be able to take historical tours and walks led by reenactors from all parts of Florida and park rangers involved in living history, who will also show how the Europeans and Native Americans used their weapons.

There will also be activities for children that will include a touch table and the opportunity to secure a badge of Junior Ranger.

The reenactment will take place on Saturday, April 16 at both 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, with the event running from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. The event launches National Parks Week in celebration of the centennial anniversary of the National Parks Service, so the De Soto National Memorial might consider using Banners to promote the event throughout the area.
