Waterbury hospital emergency department gets new leader
The Emergency Department of the Waterbury Hospital recently appointed Ije Akunyili, M.D., MPA, FACEP, as its Medical Director.
Dr. Akunyili’s previous experience included being an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Assistant Medical Director and Department Chair at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, both in Houston, Texas. She was then Associate Medical Director at Waterbury’s St. Mary’s Hospital, where her responsibilities were to oversee the operations of the emergency department.
The new medic was also given the Rising Star Award for 2016 by the American Association of Women Emergency Physicians. She is a member of the National Emergency Medicine Political Action Committee and is on the board of directors of the Connecticut College of Emergency Physicians.
Dr. Akunyili expressed her honor in leading the advanced physicians and providers in the emergency department at Waterbury Hospital, where the aim is to offer the very best in emergency care to the community.
Peter Adamo, CEO of Waterbury Hospital and Greater Waterbury Health Network, welcomed the new recruit, saying that she joins the hospital at a time when a major expansion and renovation is being planned to the emergency department so as to make patient care more advanced.
