West Hartford holds flu clinic

Recently the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District teamed up with the West Hartford Public Schools to hold a flu clinic at the West Hartford Town Hall.

The illness is widespread throughout the United States, including Connecticut. In response to the outbreak at this time of year, many cities, including Hartford, are holding flu clinics allowing people to get a shot.

Healthcare professionals admit that flu vaccines are not 100% effective, but still encourage everyone over the age of five to get a flu shot. While the shot may not prevent someone from getting sick, it will usually shorten the length of the illness. Even though the flu season is well underway, experts say people who have not had the shot should get one – it is not too late.

Steve Huleatt, the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District's director, said the more people who choose to get the vaccine, the better for the city and the state. This is because of the phenomenon of “herd immunity” whereby immunity occurs when most of the members of a population segment (herd) are vaccinated, providing some protection against infection for those who do not have immunity.

Health experts also recommend that people wash their hands with frequently, and avoid sharing utensils and cups with others.

Clinics like this are important to many, so organizers could contact a flyer printing company to create a mailer for those in the area, announcing the event.
