A downtown skyscraper may add a market soon, if the building's owners go ahead with their plans.
The owners of one of Hartford's oldest skyscrapers, the Stark Building, once the Hartford-Connecticut Trust Company, have already invested more than a million dollars in their renovation, and now plan to add a market at street level. The market will go into the space formerly occupied by CVS, and cover 6,700 square feet. This market will be three times larger than the Greenway Market, the competitor closest in size to the proposed store. Businesses like this can build brand recognition by distributing Promotional Products during the opening.
Julio Conception, a state representative and member of the Chamber of Commerce, said he has often heard the complaint that there is no grocery store available to the people who live and work downtown. He believes establishing a market will fill that need, and helps increase the feeling of community in the area.
There is some controversy about whether or not the proposed market is necessary, since a much larger market, covering 33,000 square feet, could potentially also be developed in the area. However, Luke Bronin, the mayor of Hartford, said he believes there is room for both a major supermarket and the smaller store in the area, particularly as almost 1,000 housing units have been developed downtown in the last four years, and more are planned.Get a Free Quote for Promotional Products
