New baseball stadium planned for Hartford

Baseball fans in Hartford will soon have both a new stadium and a new team to cheer for.

According to a June 4th article, the city will soon build a $60 million stadium, and move the New Britain Rock Cats to Hartford. The Cats are the Minnesota Twins' Double A affiliate; they are a minor league club in which young players learn the game as they get ready to move up to the majors.

Hartford's mayor, Pedro Segarra, says the new stadium will expand Hartford's central business district greatly, as well as reconnecting North Hartford with the rest of the city. Segarra argues that North Hartford needs opportunities and jobs, both of which the stadium will bring to the area.

Although the City Council has not yet given its formal approval to the project, council members overwhelmingly support the plan. The ballpark will seat over 9,000 spectators in a facility that comprises about 220,000 square feet. The park is slated to be completed April 1st, 2016, with a grand opening planned a week later, on April 7th, 2016.

Mayor Segarra noted the city has been talking to the Rock Cats for some time, and knew they wanted to leave New Britain. The move to Hartford will keep the team in Connecticut.

City officials and Rock Cats' management could work with a poster printing company to create striking, colorful Posters to be available on opening day.
