Hartford theater to screen unique film

Cinestudio, a Hartford theater located on Trinity College's campus, will soon be showing a very special film.

The venue will present ‘Tomka and His Friends’, the only movie ever shot by an Albanian female director.

Xhanfise Keko made her movie in 1977, and it is set during World War II. In the film, the Nazis occupy an Albanian village and in doing so, cut off access to the local soccer field. The boys of the village, furious they can no longer play soccer, become spies to help defeat the Germans. One of the film's child actors, Flurans Ilia, will participate in a question-and-answer session after the screening.

The screening is on behalf of the Albanian Cinema Project, which is an international consortium trying to save Albania's film legacy. Largely due to decades of life under a communist regime, and subsequent dramatic underfunding, the outside world is largely unaware of any films made in the European nation, and those films that have survived are beginning to deteriorate.

Event organizers might consider working with brochure printers or a professional Print company on a booklet that explains not only the film being shown, but the entire Albanian film industry, to encourage interest and support.

‘Tomka and His Friends’ will be shown at 2:30 pm tomorrow, September 19. The theater is at 300 Summit Street.
