Hartford swears in new fire chief

Although he had been working in his new position for nearly a month, Reginald Freeman was officially sworn in as Hartford's new fire chief only last Friday, March 4.

At the ceremony, Freeman said his main focus was to start moving forward by getting everyone going in the same direction. His statements come after suggestions that for too long, the Hartford Fire Department has been going the wrong way.

Luke Bronin, the city's mayor, said he believed many people understood there had to be more accountability within the department. Bronin also said Freeman has made it clear that he intends to keep the department's standards high, as well as holding it accountable for its actions, which is exactly what it needs, in Bronin's opinion.

During the time he has already served as chief, Freeman has been visiting firehouses in the city to hear directly from the firefighters about what they think should be improved. He mentioned that many personnel felt radio reception in apartment buildings was inadequate, and the issue should be addressed immediately. Chief Freeman says the city's tight budget makes things difficult, but his top priority – making every member of the department accountable, from himself to the newest hire – will not cost a cent.
