When summer comes to Hartford, so does free yoga in the parks. Hartford's Downtown Yoga sponsors Yoga in the City, which offers free classes at various parks throughout the city, according to an article in the Hartford Courant.
The effort is the brainchild of TJ Clynch, the founder of Downtown Yoga and Civic Mind LLC's executive director. Clynch says that after a traffic accident in 2010, he was sent to physical therapy, a part of which was yoga. Shortly after he began therapy, his insurance changed and he could not afford the classes, so he opened his own studio – Downtown Yoga.
The new concern became part of Civic Mind, Clynch's company, which concentrates on community development. In 2013, in order to make yoga accessible to everyone, Clynch started the Yoga in the City program.
Eliana Cardeno, who frequently attends the classes, says Yoga in the City is a way to bring all kinds of people together for a single purpose. She says it also improves residents' health and gives people a new type of workout.
Clynch saw two young women stopping to watch the yoga class in Bushnell Park, and said that was exactly what needed to happen. If people become aware of the program, it could grow quickly. Some people have been with it from the start, while others are just joining, but he notes that all seem to enjoy it.
