A musical and artistic Mardi Gras event that began last year has proved to be successful enough to make another appearance in 2015, with its founder hoping the event will become a tradition in the area.
This year, Anne Cubberly, an artist, will create more giant puppets, and two new musical groups in the form of Hartford's Proud Drill, Drum and Dance Corp., and the Trinity Samba Ensemble will be joining in the festivities. An after party is planned at Bear's Smokehouse, located on Arch Street. Partiers there will be able to listen to live bluegrass music for free.
In 2014, Joshua Michtom, a Hartford singer and band leader decided to warm up the city in the middle of an icy winter by celebrating Mardi Gras. Michtom was able to get about 50 people involved in his efforts, which included handing out candy and beads to commuters at bus stops, playing music, and taking huge puppets along Main Street in a parade.
Hartford has earmarked $900 to pay for an arts grant in order to pay performers who take part in the parade, and the Hartford Business Improvement District has donated what Michtom calls an “absurdly large quantity of beads" to the effort.
Hartford's Mardi Gras parade will start from Pratt Street on February 17, at 5:15 pm. Michtom and other event organizers can work with a poster printing company to create colorful Posters to offer for sale as mementos of the event.Get a Free Quote for Posters
