Hartford eco-home company wins award

A state organization that champions green design has given an award to Hartford Habitat.

The Connecticut Green Building Council recently presented its Residential Award of Honor to the Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity. The award is given to those programs and companies who provide an outstanding design for a single-family home.

Earlier this year, the first net-zero home they have built was dedicated by Hartford Habitat. The structure earned a HERS rating of -7; and meets the requirements for a Zero Energy Ready Home, EPA Indoor AirPLUS, and Energy Star Certification. Standard new construction, for contrast, usually gets a HERS rating of 100.

Most of the homes build by Hartford Habit earn a rating of 50. Connecticut Green Bank, Spray-Tech Insulation, Home Energy Technologies, Posigen, and Eversource were recognized as being vital in the development of the building, and bringing the project to fruition. Graphic design can be used to make such an honor part of a company's printed materials in cases like this.

In general, Hartford Habitat's new homes are extremely energy efficient. Such construction is good for the environment, but they are also good for the homeowners. People who own such homes find that utility costs drop, since they can use solar panels and other alternative sources of energy. In addition, better insulation saves on heating and cooling costs. Karraine Moody, the CEO of Hartford Habitat, says the organization is delighted to be honored as one of the state's leaders in building energy-efficient homes.
