Hall of Fame in the works for local athletes

Bulkeley High School athletes soon will have a hall of fame of their own, it was confirmed at the end of last month.

Coaches, student-athletes, administrators, and championship teams who have been involved in sports during the almost 90 years of the school's history could be honored as early as fall this year, according to Bob Raffalo, who coached baseball at Bulkeley.

Bulkeley's Upper School dean of students, Lou Frasca, said current plans are to etch the names of the honorees in the gym, while showing their images and what they've accomplished on a monitor near the main office of the school.

Candidates will be nominated by the public, according to Frasca, who expects the nomination Forms to be complete and mailed soon. The honor can be awarded posthumously.

Raffalo noted that the first inductees may number at more than a dozen, since the school is behind in the process and needs to catch up.

Two other Hartford high schools have their own halls of fame: Hartford Public High School and Weaver High School. When Weaver inaugurated its hall in 1994, the ceremony drew celebrities including Rick Mahorn, who graduated from Weaver in 1976 and was playing pro basketball with the New Jersey Nets at the time.

School officials might contact a banner printing company to create a colorful banner to display during the inaugural ceremony.
