Buffy star to open in play in Hartford

Tom Lenk, perhaps best known to television audiences for his recurring role as Andrew Wells in the series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and its spinoff ‘Angel’, will open in ‘Buyer & Cellar’ in Hartford soon.

The play, written by Jonathan Tolins, will be presented by TheaterWorks Hartford, located on Pearl Street. Tolins is the author of several other plays, including ‘The Twilight of the Golds’, and ‘If Memory Serves’. He also wrote for the television series ‘Queer as Folk’, as well as the Tony Awards and Academy Awards.

Buyer & Cellar is based on the fact that legendary singer/actress Barbra Streisand has a shopping mall in the basement of a barn on her estate in Malibu. The “mall” is actually a street of shops that house Streisand's various collections. Playwright Tolins became fascinated with the idea, and wrote a play about a young man who goes to work in this odd basement mall where he makes frozen yogurt, dusts off the dolls, and waits on the only customer—Streisand herself. The two develop a relationship, which turns the young man's life upside down.

The play has received critical raves and enjoyed a smash success on Broadway and during its national tour. It opens January 8 and runs through February 14. Theater management could work with a poster printing company on fun, clever Posters to advertise the show.
