The Arvada Center is hosting a stage production of the psychological thriller “Misery” this fall.
While the play is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, it also owes a debt to the “Misery” film adaptation directed by the late, great Rob Reiner. The play uses the same screenplay used in the film, adapted from King’s novel, by Academy Award-winnig screenplay writer William Goldman.
The story centers on a best-selling author, Paul Sheldon, who is injured in a crash. He is rescued by a woman who seems well-meaning at first, and a huge fan of the author's work. However, as the story goes on, it soon becomes clear the unassuming Annie Wilkes has a much darker side and her administration for Paul can more closely be described as an obsession.
Paul must rewrite the ending of his next best-selling novel, or else face the wrath of Annie, with her arsenal of physical and mental coercion and literal weapons.
The original film starred James Caan as Paul and Kathy Bates as the notorious Annie in a role that landed the actress an Academy Award.

“Misery” is happening from September 4 through October 11, Wednesday-Saturday evenings at 7 pm, and during 1 pm matinees on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. It all takes place at the Arvada Center at 6901 Wadsworth Blvd in Arvada.
