Valley Village area offered milkweed giveaway

Monarch butterflies count on milkweed for their survival, and Valley Village property owners who would like to offer these long distance Flyers a helping hand will soon find it easier.

The Santa Monica Fund has scheduled an event that will see members of the public go home with milkweed plants they can install on their own property. This will take place at Cottonwood Urban Farm, and each household can pick up as many as six plants.

Participants will receive narrowleaf milkweed (asclepias fascicularis), which is a species native to the area. It offers attractive flowers and leaves, and since it is a perennial, the plants will come back year after year, providing food for hungry monarch butterfly caterpillars. Along with the giveaway, attendees will be invited to sit in on a plant talk offered in both English and Spanish.

A native plant day or similar activity offers a fun way for the public to get their feet wet in environmental stewardship. A brochure printing company can prepare an assortment of styles of handouts for an event, as well as seed Envelopes and other materials

This opportunity for the public to create a spot for monarch butterflies to feed and raise family will be on offer this Saturday, July 20. It will be held at 8380 Ventura Canyon Avenue, and an advance registration link is available on the My Valley Village website.
