Studio City families to receive guaranteed income

Cash payments of $1,000 a month are now available to families living under the federal poverty level in Studio City.

This new guaranteed income project from the city of Los Angeles, known as the “Basic Income Guaranteed: Los Angeles Economic Assistance Pilot” (BIG: LEAP) program, is planning to help up to 3,200 people in the city with a total of close to $40m. Poster printing can be used throughout a city and its neighborhoods to inform residents of such programs.

Curren Price, a Councilmember of the 9th District, sponsored the program. Money from individual council districts will be used to fund the program. Another $4m will be provided by the city to determine how effective the program is.

Each family selected will receive $1,000 a month for one year. Those who qualify for the funds need to be at least 18 years old, live in Los Angeles, have an income level at or below the federal poverty line, have experienced a medical or economic hardship related to the events over the past year and a half, and have at least one dependent child (or be expecting one shortly).

Mayor Eric Garcetti said that the goal of this program is to enable people to break out of poverty. He added that introducing a guaranteed basic income is one way to help build a stronger safety net for the community.
