The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recently accredited the Gary and Mary West Emergency Department at the University of California (UC) San Diego Health in La Jolla as an emergency department for older adults. This facility is sufficiently close to Sorrento Valley so that seniors in that community will be able to take advantage of its services.
Medical director of the Emergency Department at UC San Diego Health, Dr. Vaishal Tolia, commented that this recognition acknowledges the comprehensive and individualized care that is given by the department to older adults which has made it so successful.
President and CEO of the West Health Institute, Shelley Lyford, added that this department s the first such facility in the state to be recognized in this way by the ACEP and will enable models of acute care for seniors to be adopted across the country that will be customized to meet their individual needs.
Both nurses and physicians need to have received specialized geriatric training, specific environmental criteria need to be met such as aids in mobility, and a geriatric quality improvement program needs to be implemented in order to receive such AECP accreditation.
