Sorrento Valley bakes healthy for Christmas

Generosity at this time of year often extends to a generous effect on people’s waistlines. To help give Sorrento Valley residents more choices this season, Bastyr University is offering a one-day class titled Holiday Baking with Wholesome Sweeteners.

The focus - of course - is on ways to take some of the processed sugar out of everyone’s favorite winter treats while keeping the flavor. The lesson will begin by teaching participants what makes a sweetener healthy, their calories and nutritional values, and how the body processes them. This will also be contrasted with processed or artificial sweeteners and their health impacts.

After the introduction, the class will focus on three specific desserts: Gingerbread Friends, Chocolate-Dipped Coconut Macaroons, and Winter Fruit Almond Cobbler. Students will make all three recipes as part of the lesson, with a generous number of ingredients provided to try each one. At the end, attendees will be able to take home their sweets, as well as a small booklet printing with the recipes of what they have made.

The Holiday Baking with Wholesome Sweeteners class will be held on December 15 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Bastyr University, located at 4110 Sorrento Valley Blvd. The cost for the class is $40 each and class sizes are limited, so interested parties must sign up ahead of time.
