The Jim MacLauren Award was recently presented to Bob Babbitt, at the Celebration of Abilities Awards Dinner for 2018 in Sorrento Valley at the Qualcomm Theater.
This award is the highest honor bestowed by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and is given to an individual or individuals who have made the greatest contribution to the mission of the CAF during the past year. Babbitt is an inductee in the Ironman Hall of Fame and is founder of the CAF.
Over the past year, Babbitt has been an advocate for athletes, a media personality and spokesperson, and, as the CAF notes, embodies the true spirit of its community.
In the late 1970s, Babbitt started racing triathlons and in 1980, completed his first Ironman triathlon on Oahu, followed by five more on the larger island. Both the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame and the Ironman Hall of Fame have recognized Babbitt for his accomplishments.
He is the creator of the Muddy Buddy Run and Ride Series and Competitor Radio, and co-founded Competitor Magazine.
Co-Founder, President, and Chairman of the CAF Board, Jeffrey Essakow, commented that there is no one over the past quarter century who has lived the mission of the CAF with more selflessness and passion than Bob Babbitt, his fellow co-founder.
