REI Sacramento will be presenting a lecture about backpacking the Sierras. The program will help novice hikers get ready to explore the rivers, peaks, and secluded lakes basins in the Sierra backcountry.
Chris Casado, co-founder of the Trans-Sierra Extreme Challenge, will give a digital presentation of his 75-mile trek across the Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks that ended at the Mt. Whitney summit.
Mr. Casado will then give some tricks-of-the-trade in preparing for a backcountry experience. He will cover topics such as permits, gear, safety and weather considerations and the principles of Leave No Trace.
Guests can then sign up for challenges or hiking trips such as the Trans-Sierra Extreme Challenge (ending at Mt. Whitney), Grand Canyon Challenge, and various Youth Challenges. The Hell for Sure Challenge is a 40-mile trek through the John Muir Wilderness. Pictures taken of routes like these can be taken to local Print shops later for some awe-inspiring poster printing.
Novices are welcome to the event and on all the challenges. REI takes care of all the gear, permits, logistics and food. Hikers will carry between 30 and 40 lb. packs which will get lighter as the food and fuel are consumed. Guides will be positioned at the front and back of each group for safety and support.
Backpack the Sierra to Mt. Whitney will be from 7 pm until 8:30 pm Wednesday, March 20th at REI, 1790 Expo Parkway. Admission will be free, but registration is necessary.
