Riverside will be celebrating an iconic figure., and the opening of the Civil Rights Institute, with the 28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Walk-A-Thon in mid-January.
The theme for this year’s walk will be “A Legacy of Strength, A Future of Action.” The walk will be a 5K beginning at the Stratton Community Center, 2008 Martin Luther King Boulevard, stopping on Main Street at the Martin Luther King Jr. statue and finishing at the Riverside Civil Rights Institute, 3933 Mission Inn Avenue.
A short program honoring Dr. Judy White, Chani Beeman, Samara Alavarado, Andy Melendrez, and Councilmember Erin Edwards will be held after the walk. The venue will have entertainment, booths, and an acknowledgement of the organization that brings the most walkers.
Over 2,000 participants from local schools, community groups, regional businesses, and volunteers are expected to attend. Groups that march in events like these often get banner printing done beforehand to carry with them in the parade.
Proceeds from the event will go to Riverside African-American Historical Society in its efforts to maintain the Martin Luther King Jr. statue, bestow Clarke & Grier College Scholarships, and continue with the Civil Rights Institute.
The $35 registration fee will include T-Shirts featuring the events MLK graphic design, commemorative coins, and Ontario Clippers Game Family packs to those registering early.
The MLK Walk-A-Thon will be January 16 beginning at 10:00 am.
