Lunar New Year Festival returns

Riverside Lunar New Year Festival will be back in Downtown Riverside at the end of the month.

As the city’s observance of Asian American culture, the event marks the Year of the Tiger, which signifies strength, braveness, and exorcising bad luck.

The opening ceremony will take place from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm on Mission Inn Avenue on Saturday.

Items such as flame-grilled squid, steamed dumplings, buns, and skewed cumin-flavored lamb will be sold by local vendors.

Performers will showcase their talents on the event stage. Some of these will be Filipino martial arts demonstrations, UCR Japanese Taiko Drums, Merano Cultural Group performing on traditional musical instruments, and traditional Chinese dance including the lion dance. Other acts will be indie/rock, Mexican Folklorico dance, belly dancing, violin, and psychedelic rock.

Stationery printers often depict lion dancing in their notecards and Chinese New Year Holiday Cards.

Over 100 regional and local artisans will be in the marketplace selling modern and traditional items such as Japanese and terra cotta dolls, hand-cut paper art, Vietnamese and Chinese hand-written calligraphy and jewelry. Local artists will be drawing manga and caricatures, applying henna and creating custom paintings.

Children can enjoy inflatable rides, a 20-foot rock wall, a 40-foot obstacle course, and a Japanese game machine corner.

The 2022 Riverside Lunar New Year will be January 29 from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, and January 30 from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Admission and parking will be free.
