City to enjoy a Greek festival

Soon, Riverside residents will be able to enjoy a taste of Greece by participating in a day of culture, music, history, and sampling authentic Greek cuisine at Riverside’s Greek Fest.

The event will be free, family-friendly and open to the public. Authentic Greek food such as spanakopita (spinach pies), sausage called ‘loukanido’ , skewers of meat called souvlaki, and of course gyros and falafel will be available, along with those world-renown pastries baklava, loukoumades (the honey donut holes), and assorted Greek cookies.

Music will be provided by Synthesi, a Southern Califonia Greek Band. A traditional folk dance ensemble, Paralia will be holding dance exhibitions on the weekend as well. Their vibrantly-colored costumes will make interesting subjects for pictures for later poster printing. Dance lessons will be available throughout the event too.

The Art and Culture museum-styled exhibit will display all facets of Greek life and will include frescos, information videos, Books, and an interactive art center for the children. The 50/50 Treasure Chest is a chance for one lucky attendee to win half of the proceeds from the raffle. Tickets will be $100 each.

This event is scheduled for October 2, 3, 4 at St. Andrews Orthodox Christian Church, 4700 Canyon Crest Drive, Riverside. Adult general admission will be $5 per person; college students with IDs can get in for $2 on Friday and $4 on the other two days. Parking will be free at the University California Riverside Parking Lot 30, and shuttle service will be without charge too.
