Cultural celebration near Fremont
A party is coming up near Fremont that will share a Pacific Island culture with everyone.
The Chenchule’ CHamoru Fiesta will give attendees a chance to explore the CHamoru culture. This is an indigenous group from the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean, with the name derived from Spanish where “ch” is a single letter, hence both being capitalised.
Although the CHamoru have been characterized as Filipino, this is untrue both genetically and culturally. Instead, they are a distinct linguistic and cultural group separate from other groups in the Pacific Islands such as Hawai’ians and Filipinos. In addition, the people of Guam also identify as CHamoru.
The Fiesta has a host/emcee, a DJ, live entertainment, vendors, and food. DJ Kidd will be on hand to handle the music when a band takes a break. Among the musicians scheduled to appear is Chris “Boomer” Unchangco. This native of Guam learned the principles of CHamoru culture: “familia” (family) and “respetu” (respect). He developed into a songwriter, singer, and performer, and his friends began calling him “Boomer” in appreciation of his voice.
The Chenchule’ CHamoru Fiesta is set for September 25, from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at Swiss Park in Newark, a short distance from Fremont. Organizers of events like this can use banner printing to create colorful decorations suitable for outdoor events.
