Call it a feather in the helmet of the Costa Mesa Fire Department, as Costa Mesa’s fire chief Dan Stefano has been officially named the president of the California Fire Chiefs Association (CalChiefs).
Stefano is the first Orange County fire chief to hold the position in 20 years, and he is also the first in history from Costa Mesa.
CalChiefs is a major firefighter umbrella organization that represents more than 800 agencies across California and, according to its website, strives to be “the voice of the California Fire Service.” The organization communicates with state and federal officials and also represents EMS, Rescue, and Community Risk Reduction groups. The appointment comes at a crucial time here in California, due to the much-publicized ongoing wildfire spread.
Stefano is also the president of the Orange County Fire Chiefs Association and will keep the position. Despite his new role, Stefano maintains that his number one priority is still being chief of the Costa Mesa Fire Department. Stefano was officially sworn into his new post in September. He grew up in Newport Beach and was the chief of the Laguna Beach Fire Department for close to 20 years. He has been the Costa Mesa fire chief since 2013.
