The city of Costa Mesa is once again supporting its adopted battalion of Marines.
The 1st Battalion 5th Marines (1/5), currently stationed in Afghanistan, is always in need of items from home to remind them that people are concerned for their welfare and to boost battalion morale.
The Care-Pac Program is designed to provide support for the Marine Battalion and the collection point for donated goods is located in the foot locker in the lobby of city hall.
Monetary donations will be used to offset the cost of shipping the supplies via FPA/AP and are tax deductible. Monetary donations may be made to City of Costa Mesa 1/5 Fund.
Items in particular demand include toothpaste and brushes, dental floss, foot powder , hand sanitizer, jerky, granola bars, Vienna sausages, handi-wipes, hand lotion, sun screen, and shampoo. Canned foods, such as Spam and tuna, are also particularly gratefully received, as are high-energy snacks like nuts.
A former agricultural town, Costa Mesa has a military history serving as the former training facility for the Santa Ana Army Air base during World War II - one of the largest in the world at the time. It is currently home to the Air National Guard 222nd Combat Communications Squadron.
