What's Happening in Flagstaff, AZ…

The Coconino Cooperative Extension will be offering a Master Gardener class beginning in late January.

Those here in Flagstaff wishing to become certified Master Gardeners will need to take the 15-week class conducted by specialists and University of Arizona Cooperative Extension faculty and complete 50 hours of volunteer work over the following 13 months. To remain certified, they must provide 12 hours of volunteer work annually and take six more hours of education from the University of Arizona.

Volunteer work will consist of staffing office horticulture help lines, giving demonstrations and talks to local groups, assisting students with wildlife habitats and school gardening projects, providing advice and information at farmers’ markets, festivals, individuals, and groups, and helping non-profit organizations with horticulture educational activities.

The course content will cover the latest science-based information on fruit trees, care, soils, botany, pruning, staking planting, shrubs, and ornamental trees. They will also include irrigation, watering, insects, plant diseases, wildlife in the garden, vegetables, weed and pest management and pesticide safety. A Home Horticulture Certificate is available for those not wishing to participate in the volunteer part of the program.

Master Gardeners often pass out Business Cards to properly introduce themselves to groups that they will be addressing.
Registration will be $225. The classes will be from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm on Tuesdays from January 23rd through April 30th at Coconino County Health and Human Services, 2625 N King Street.
